Classification of Joints and Muscles β€” The Articulate Body

Classification of Joints and Muscles for Massage Therapy & Movement Arts

ANAT-KINE-0103 - Classification of Joints and Muscles for Massage Therapy & Movement Arts

The Articulate Body: Joint Types, Muscle Roles, and Functional Motion

This course provides a clear, embodied understanding of how joints and muscles create movement, stability, and structural balance. Students learn the distinctions among synovial, fibrous, and cartilaginous joints, explore major muscle classifications, and examine how muscles work in coordinated groups to generate motion. Through diagrams, movement labs, and palpation practice, learners build the foundational functional literacy essential for kinesiology, corrective exercise, and therapeutic massage techniques.

In-person or live online; lecture, visual aids, joint and muscle models, movement and palpation labs, group discussion

Learning Objectives & Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Describe and differentiate synovial, fibrous, and cartilaginous joints
  • Relate joint structure to range of motion and stability
  • Classify muscles by action, location, and functional group (agonist/antagonist/synergist)
  • Recognize how joint and muscle interplay contributes to functional movement patterns
  • Use proper terminology to explain movement at key joints used in massage and yoga

πŸ‘₯

Target Audience

  • Beginning and intermediate massage therapy students
  • Yoga and movement teachers wanting to cue from joint and muscle function
  • Bodyworkers and trainers interested in translating anatomy into movement strategies

πŸ“

Prerequisites

  • Recommended: Orientation to the Human Body (ANAT-KINE 0101) and The Human Skeleton (ANAT-KINE 0102) or equivalent knowledge of planes, directions, and basic skeletal landmarks

πŸŽ“

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Participation in movement labs exploring joint actions and muscular roles
  • Short quizzes on joint types, muscle classifications, and movement terminology
  • Applied case examples (e.g., β€œWhat muscles and joints are involved in this movement?”)
