Structural Anatomy and Kinesiology of the Elbow, Forearm, Wrist and Hand

Elbow, Forearm, Wrist & Hand Anatomy for Massage & Manual Therapists

ANAT-KINE-0204 - Elbow, Forearm, Wrist & Hand Anatomy for Massage & Manual Therapists

Upper Limb Mechanics, Grip Patterns, and Fine Motor Function

This detailed regional course covers the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand, focusing on joint mechanics, muscle groups, and functional patterning of the distal upper extremity. Students study flexor and extensor compartments, pronation/supination, carpal alignment, and common overuse patterns related to gripping and tool use. The course emphasizes how detailed anatomical awareness refines bodywork on hands, forearms, and wrists.

In-person or live online; lecture, anatomical models, movement labs, palpation practice, and assessments

Learning Objectives & Outcomes

Students will:

  • Identify the bones and articulations of the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand
  • Understand major flexor/extensor, pronator/supinator, and intrinsic hand muscles
  • Describe movement mechanics for flexion/extension, pronation/supination, and grip
  • Recognize common strain patterns and compensations in upper limb usage
  • Apply structural knowledge to bodywork strokes and movement modifications

👥

Target Audience

  • Massage students and LMTs working with RSI, forearm strain, or hand tension
  • Yoga/fitness teachers addressing weight-bearing through hands and wrists
  • Practitioners interested in detailed upper limb anatomy for clinical reasoning

📝

Prerequisites

  • Completion of foundational anatomy/kinesiology courses or equivalent knowledge of skeleton and joint basics

🎓

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Active participation in class labs and discussion
  • Completion of three quizzes:
    • Quiz: Bone Landmarks of the Elbow, Forearm, Wrist and Hand
    • Quiz: Articulations and Ligaments
    • Quiz: Muscles of the Elbow, Forearm, Wrist and Hand
