Structural Anatomy and Kinesiology of the Shoulder and Arm

Shoulder & Arm Anatomy and Kinesiology for Upper-Body Bodywork

ANAT-KINE-0203 - Shoulder & Arm Anatomy and Kinesiology for Upper-Body Bodywork

Scapulohumeral Rhythm, Upper-Limb Mechanics & Functional Movement Foundations

This regional anatomy course explores the intricate relationships of the shoulder girdle and arm β€” a complex, mobile region essential to lifting, reaching, weight-bearing, and expressive movement. Students study scapular positioning, rotator cuff anatomy, glenohumeral mechanics, arm musculature, and common dysfunctional patterns such as impingement, protraction, or instability. Labs include palpation, motion testing, structural mapping, and movement observation to develop both clinical and somatic literacy.

In-person or live online; lecture, anatomical models, movement labs, palpation practice, and assessments

Learning Objectives & Outcomes

Students will:

  • Identify major bones, joints, and landmarks of the scapula, clavicle, and humerus
  • Name and locate key muscles involved in shoulder stabilization and arm movement
  • Explain scapulohumeral rhythm and the role of the shoulder girdle
  • Recognize common compensations (e.g., upper trap dominance, β€œwinging” scapulae)
  • Apply knowledge to observation, manual techniques, and movement cueing

πŸ‘₯

Target Audience

  • Massage therapists working with shoulder pain, rotator cuff strain, and arm tension
  • Yoga and movement teachers teaching arm balances, weight-bearing, and overhead postures
  • Trainers and somatic educators focusing on upper extremity function

πŸ“

Prerequisites

  • ANAT-KINE 0101–0103 and 0102 (Skeleton) recommended

πŸŽ“

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Regional quizzes on bone landmarks and muscle groups
  • Palpation labs for scapular and humeral landmarks
  • Simple movement assessments (e.g., shoulder abduction, flexion patterns)
