The skin is the largest organ of the body—our protective shell, our sensory veil, our living threshold. This course explores the structure and function of the integumentary system—skin, hair, nails, glands—and how it relates to the work of massage therapists. Students learn tissue layers, sensory receptors, thermoregulation, wound-healing basics, and skin-related contraindications. Through palpation, observation, and case analysis, learners develop competence in safe, informed touch.

This course is designed for massage therapy students, estheticians, bodyworkers, and anyone interested in understanding the anatomy and physiology of the skin. It is ideal for practitioners who wish to deepen their awareness of the integumentary system in order to apply more informed, intentional, and respectful touch.
This course is open to all learners. No prior experience in anatomy or physiology is required, though completion of ANAT-PHYS 0301 or equivalent introductory study is recommended. A sense of wonder and a readiness to explore the skin from both scientific and soulful perspectives is encouraged.
