Target Audience

Thai Massage practitioners and students dedicated to deepening their understanding of ethical responsibilities inherent in traditional Thai Massage practice.

Learning Objectives

Introduce and discuss the traditional intentions of a Thai massage session, compare alignment with massage scope of practice
Introduce and discuss the Buddhist roots of Thai massage as part of holistic traditional hands-on health care practices and how the five precepts may be interpreted as foundation for ethical practice of health care service:
- Do not harm
- Do not take what isn't given
- Do not act with sexual misconduct
- Do not speak dishonestly, nor divisive, harsh, and gossip/idle chatter
- Do not become intoxicated (i.e., alcohol, drugs).
Introduce and discuss the Wai Kru healing arts ceremony performed as therapist centering exercise, it's translation to English
Introduce and discuss the four bramaviharas as they relate to cultivation of an effective and professional health care service:
- Metta - friendliness and goodwill, building appropriate rapport with the client-therapist relationship
- Karuna - compassion, listening carefully to understand client's concerns and chief complaints
- Mudita - sympathetic joy, sharing happiness for the client meeting their goals
- Upeksha - maintaining professionalism with equanimity with non-discrimination

Upon successful completion, students will:

Understand and articulate the significance of the Four Bramaviharas in ethical Thai Massage practice
Participate meaningfully in the Wai Khru Ceremony, recognizing its ethical and cultural importance
Reflect deeply on personal and professional ethical conduct through guided discussions
Integrate traditional ethical teachings into daily therapeutic interactions

Prerequisites

Licensed massage therapists may register independently for either Part 1 12 Hours, Part 2 8 Hours, Ethics 4 Hours, or the 3-day 24 hour series
